Changing Error Messages

Anticipate problems with your website and you'll keep customers coming back for more. You're prepared, you're confident, now show it on your site. Though we try to prevent those pesky "File Not Found" error messages, they still tend to pop-up. These messages discourage your visitors, but you can take precautions to prevent this from happening.

Change the "File Not Found" message to something less technical and scary. Provide visitors with a friendly response and by being concerned, you will show that you are serious about their business. Place your logo and slogan on the new message and include some helpful information. Tell customers that you are sorry for the inconvenience and give them contact information for where to report the problem.

Contact your web host company for information about how to change your error messages. Most web host companies give you this option, but many individual sites fail to take advantage of it. Communicate your desire for the change, then go over specific details you want to see in the new message (i.e.: logo, slogan, contact info.)

Benefits of Changing your Error Messages:

Offering E-mail services

Email is the hottest way to communicate, hands down. Why not go with the flow and offer your customers an email service through your site? This is another win/win situation- the customer gets an email and with a company they love, and you get your extension attached to their email address. (For example, Tom @ SearchEngines.com) Friends and family will recognize your company name in the address and come to see what your site is all about. (Free advertising!)

To set up your own email service, there are a few options. Check out companies on the web that offer free email accounts. Note: Don't take it too seriously when you see that the service is free, because as someone once told me, "nothing in life is ever really free." The upside is that you don't have to put money down to set up your email service. The downside is that the company who sets up the service is entitled to a percentage of your advertising. Do your research; some want 90% of your advertising while others want less than 20%. (The remaining percentage will go to you.)

If you don't like the idea of someone taking a piece of your advertising, there's another option. Sign up for a mail system where you pay a regular amount every month or so, and you have full control of your advertising. See which system works best for you and keep in mind that the low-costs you'll incur are worth good customer-retention.
